Growing up on the prairies of southwestern Manitoba, I was raised with a fundamental respect for the environment. Moving to Winnipeg in 2006, I have been surprised by how quickly I have lost this sense of respect. My confusion and contradictory ideas about where I come from and where I am today, find expression through the use of contrasting materials in my sculptures; charred and distressed forms and surfaces are created as rough earthy clays are cracked by blistering metals or covered by sleek porcelains. Through these unexpected materials I destroy my nostalgic version of nature, an image of sprawling prairie fields dotted with rows of windbreak trees, reflecting my guilt in my complicit destruction of the environment.
