I have always been curious about the development and change of culture. Adapt, change, grow has been a practice for as long as people have existed. Yet now, the speed at which cultural shifts happen is staggering. Traits can be picked up and discarded like last season's ironic moustaches. As we all communicate and travel so quickly and easily, absorbing and discarding ideas and cultural traits at will, we can find ourselves with more shared culture and foundation for contact with a Manga fan living in Japan or London than with the person living next door. Community is culture. Culture is shared. Culture is no longer bound by blood, location or reality. My work explores these concepts by fusing, modifying and questioning aspects of cultural affinity in ceramic.
Exploitation of strong lines and negative space throughout the pieces are not only a nod towards formal aesthetic theory but a necessary control to keep the pieces beautiful to the eye, not just to touch. I prefer to leave the viewer uncertain about what they have just experienced but eager to experience it again.
